Community Heart & Soul Welcomes Karen Larsen as Market Development Associate; Announces Leadership Promotions

Community Heart & Soul is excited to announce the hiring of Karen Larsen as Market Development Associate, supporting the organization’s continued national growth and partnership development efforts. Larsen brings a strong background in relationship management, executive support, organizational operations, and community leadership. Most recently, she served at National Life Group, where she supported senior leadership by coordinating complex projects and managing communications across a wide range of stakeholders. In her new role, Larsen will support Community Heart & Soul’s market development strategy, helping to identify and cultivate partnerships and connecting Certified Heart & Soul Coaches with communities nationwide.
In addition to her professional experience, Larsen has demonstrated deep community commitment and leadership. She served on the Cabot, Vermont Selectboard, helping lead local response and recovery efforts following the catastrophic flooding of 2023 and 2024.
“I’m thrilled to join Community Heart & Soul at such an exciting time of growth,” said Larsen. “I’ve seen firsthand how strong relationships and community-driven work can create lasting impact, and I’m eager to help expand partnerships that bring the Heart & Soul model to more towns across the country. It’s an honor to support a mission that empowers communities to shape their own futures.”
Community Heart & Soul also announced the promotion of Sara Lightner to Vice President of Programs, recognizing her leadership in advancing program design, training, and national network development. She has strengthened and evolved the Coach Training Program—combining formal instruction, collaborative learning, and fieldwork—while expanding the organization’s capacity to train, mentor, and certify Coaches nationwide. Known for her collaborative, coaching-centered approach, Lightner has built strong relationships across a growing national network and fostered a dynamic community of practice focused on listening, co-creation, and continuous improvement. Originally from Iowa, she served in the Peace Corps as Director of Programming and Training in Vanuatu and in the Eastern Caribbean including Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
In addition, Al Getler has also been promoted to Senior Vice President of Market Development, reflecting his pivotal role in expanding partnerships and strengthening the organization’s national reach. Getler served as the last president and publisher of the Burlington Free Press before consulting with newspapers around the US and Canada.
“These additions and promotions reflect the strength of our team and our commitment to growing thoughtfully while staying rooted in our mission,” said Mark Sherman, President of Community Heart & Soul.
