Community Heart & Soul is a resident-driven process that engages the entire population of a town in identifying what they love most about their community, what future they want for it, and how to achieve it. Developed and field-tested over a decade in partnership with over 100 small cities and towns across America, Community Heart & Soul is a proven process for engaging a community in shaping its future.
The Community Heart & Soul organization is focused on expanding our namesake program to include hundreds of additional small cities and towns across the country. The VP of Business Development will be instrumental in helping us achieve this objective.
The VP of Business Development is responsible for developing and implementing the ‘sales’ strategy for Community Heart & Soul, which is delivered through:
1) A network of contracted Heart & Soul Coaches based throughout the country
2) Partnering organizations, particularly within the Community Foundation sector.
As our customer-facing sales force, Heart & Soul Coaches conduct in-person introductory meetings with residents and town officials in prospective Heart & Soul communities and at regional events. Working with the VP of Business Development, they develop and implement marketing plans focused primarily on areas (‘clusters’) where Community Heart & Soul already has a presence, leveraging local connections and testimonials to drive adoption in adjacent markets.
The VP of Business Development is responsible for providing Coaches with the sales training, skills, and tools needed to successfully execute Coach market development plans. This includes assisting and mentoring Coaches in the field and helping to ‘close’ towns interested in implementing Community Heart & Soul.
The VP of Business Development is also responsible for expanding the number of partner organizations, particularly within the community foundation sector. Community foundations are ideally suited to support Community Heart & Soul if they are mission-aligned with our work, have deep connections with small cities and towns in their geographic footprints, and can offer financial and human resources and infrastructure needed to promote, coach, and support Community Heart & Soul.
Working in close collaboration with the Sr Director of Training and an in-house staff who train, certify, and support more than 80 independent Heart & Soul Coaches nationwide, the VP of Business Development ensures that towns practicing Community Heart & Soul do so in a manner consistent with program guidelines.
The VP of Business Development is a hands-on role that requires a high degree of proficiency in consultative sales and partnership and program management. The VP of Business Development must be an accomplished sales pro with experience managing remote teams and partnerships and someone who embraces an entrepreneurial culture that values nimbleness, cross-functional collaboration, and a sense of urgency regarding our mission.
Success in this role will be measured by the growth of new Heart & Soul communities.
The Community Heart & Soul organization is governed by an engaged Board of Trustees who meet regularly with foundation leadership to provide oversight, guidance, and assistance.
This position will be based in our business office in Shelburne, VT and require out-of-state travel.
